Why Chatham Alumni Accounts Are Being Deactivated

Chatham University is committed to protecting the privacy, security, and integrity of our institutional systems and data. As part of this commitment, the University regularly reviews account-access practices to ensure they align with current cybersecurity standards and risk-management protocols.

Email accounts that remain active beyond a person’s enrollment or employment can increase cybersecurity risk, particularly when accounts are used infrequently, contain outdated recovery information, or are no longer actively monitored. These accounts may be more vulnerable to unauthorized access, phishing, identity theft, and other malicious activity. A compromised account can affect not only the individual account holder but also other members of the Chatham community and the University’s broader technology environment.

Deactivating alumni accounts after a defined transition period reduces the number of inactive accounts within University systems, limits opportunities for unauthorized access, and helps Chatham maintain a more secure and sustainable digital environment. This change is not intended to diminish the important and lasting relationship between Chatham and its alumni. Alumni will continue to have access to University resources and services, including transcript requests, career support, alumni programs, events, and opportunities to remain connected with the Chatham community.

We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our alumni as we take these important steps to strengthen cybersecurity and protect the Chatham community.
