NameCoach is an online service that allows students to record name pronunciations accurately.

Overview

NameCoach is an online service that allows students to record name pronunciations accurately. It also has an area for added pronouns. Both tools will help to promote inclusion, belonging, and rapport within Brightspace.

Within a Brightspace course module, instructors will need to add two items -- NameCoach Recorder and NameCoach Roster. To add, go to Existing Activities > External Learning Tools and select NameCoach Recorder. Repeat for NameCoach Roster. 

NameCoach Recorder

This tool allows students to record their names and enter their pronouns. After the tool is added to the courses, direct students to the link; students can either click on Record Name OR Edit your info to record their information.

Students will be directed to add their pronouns (a required field) and record their name pronunciation. Students can record from their phones, use the web recorder, or record and upload a file. Students have the option to re-record as many times as they need. To save, students need to click Submit and Finish.

 

NameCoach Roster

NameCoach Roster allows instructors to listen to student recordings and see associated pronouns. Students who have not recorded their names are listed under the Unrecorded Names tab. Instructors can email students from the roster page and see the previous emails sent. NameCoach provides a default email template, which the instructor can customize.

If instructors don’t want the Roster shared with students, the activity can be hidden from students within Brightspace.

 

Q. Do students need to re-record their names for every class?

A. Student names and pronouns will appear across courses and semesters if their email remains the same. If a student changes their email address, they will need to re-record their name and renter their pronouns.
 

Q. Can students update their pronouns at any time?

A. Yes, students can re-record their names or pronouns at any time if the NameCoach Recorder is open to students within a course.
